MH370 search team finds second shipwreck

Search teams looking for the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 think they have stumbled across a 19th-Century shipwreck.

Underwater sonar equipment turned up a strange object more than two miles beneath the waves just before Christmas.

Earlier this month they sent down an unmanned submarine to take a picture.

Experts at the Western Australian Museum think it is a 19th-century ship made of metal.

This is the second uncharted shipwreck found miles beneath the waves during the search for the missing plane.

Last year, investigators released ghostly images of man-made debris scattered along the sea floor, including what is clearly an old anchor.

The hunt for MH370 no longer makes headlines, but what some have described as the most complex search in history has continued for almost two years.

Three ships are methodically combing the belly of the southern Indian Ocean. Before this search, scientists knew more about the surface of the moon than the bottom of this stretch of water, so it is not surprising that they keep revealing secrets.

Along with the shipwrecks, a number of previously unknown underwater volcanoes have been discovered.

The search teams have now checked two thirds of the 120,000 sq km search zone.

Wing find

That is an area not much smaller than Greece, so mountainous that it dwarfs the Alps, with weather as hostile as any on earth. Because conditions are so dangerous, the three ships involved travel at walking pace.

Two French schoolchildren and a Ukrainian tourist have been killed in an avalanche at a ski resort in the French Alps, officials say.

Three others - two pupils and a teacher - were seriously injured. The two pupils were found in state of cardiac arrest and the teacher was unconscious.

All members of the group have now been accounted for by rescue teams.

The avalanche struck the group, their teacher and the Ukrainian on a closed piste in the Les Deux Alpes area.

More than 60 rescuers with dogs assisted by four helicopters went to the scene, the local prefecture said in a statement (in French).

Witnesses told the France Bleu radio station that the avalanche was likely to have been triggered by groups skiing through the area.

French President Francois Hollande offered "sincere condolences" to the victims' families and said "the solidarity of the whole nation" was with them.

France's education minister will visit Lyon on Wednesday evening, Mr Hollande said.

The Bellecombe piste is situated on a particularly icy north-facing side of mountain, the radio station said. It is black-rated - the most difficult level.

The piste had been closed since the beginning of the ski season because of a lack of snow over the holiday period, a manager at Les Deux Alpes told local media.

However, large quantities of snow have fallen on the French Alps in recent days, raising the risk of avalanches, the regional government said (in French).

It urged skiers and other mountain users to take extra care and stay on marked pistes.

Four other people - two Lithuanians, a Spaniard and a Czech - have died since the New Year in avalanches in the French Alps, AFP reported.
